# Chlorine, Chloramine, Hardness, and Nitrates in Home Water

> EPA MRDLs and MCLs set the numbers. Carbon, catalytic carbon, softeners, and RO do different jobs.

In short

Match chemistry to technology: **free chlorine** → NSF 42 carbon; **chloramine** → catalytic carbon/contact time; **nitrate-N 10 mg/L MCL** → RO or proper IX, not taste filters; **hardness** → softener (NSF 44) for scale, not a toxin cure-all. Know DBP MCLs (TTHM 80 µg/L, HAA5 60 µg/L).

Municipal water is a disinfectant success story with residual chemistry you can taste. That residual is not the same problem as agricultural nitrate—and filters that fix one often ignore the other.

## How do chlorine and chloramine residuals work?

Utilities maintain residual disinfectant to control regrowth in pipes. Free chlorine is reactive and easier for standard activated carbon to reduce for taste.

Chloramine’s stability is a distribution feature and a filtration challenge. Confirm chloramine claims on product performance data sheets.

Removing all residual without another barrier can be unwise on private systems that depend on residual for safety—context matters.

## What health standards sit beside taste complaints?

Primary standards for nitrate/nitrite protect infants. DBP MCLs limit chronic exposure to byproducts of disinfection chemistry.

Aesthetic issues (hardness scale, chlorine smell) are real quality-of-life problems but different from primary MCL exceedances.

CCR consumer confidence reports and private well tests tell you which bucket you are in.

## Which NSF standards map to which jobs?

NSF/ANSI 42: aesthetic effects such as chlorine, taste, odor. NSF/ANSI 53: health effects for specified contaminants. NSF/ANSI 58: RO systems. NSF/ANSI 44: cation exchange softeners. NSF/ANSI 401: emerging compounds when claimed.

Buy the claim, not the brochure photo. Certification to a standard without the contaminant reduction claim you need is incomplete.

## What is a practical home stack?

City water with chlorine taste only: quality carbon may suffice. Chloramine city water: verify catalytic carbon. Nitrate-elevated well: test → RO or IX with maintenance. Hardness scale: softener for plumbing, separate drinking treatment if chemicals are the issue.

Never assume one pitcher solves chlorine, hardness, nitrate, and microbes simultaneously.

Readers should dual-source primary literature, translate slogans into exposure units and effect sizes, and rank interventions by expected value under uncertainty. Cheap reversible steps often outrank extreme protocols. Opportunity cost is real: hours spent on unvalidated tests are hours not spent on sleep, training, protein adequacy, and primary care. Sex, life stage, comorbidities, medications, and geography change interpretation. Prefer falsifiable claims with named endpoints over multi-disease cure lists. Update beliefs when stronger trials appear rather than freezing identity around a single paper or influencer narrative. Measured curiosity beats both panic and complacency. Further reading should prioritize primary sources and consensus documents over secondary social summaries. When evidence is mixed, state both the signal and the limits in the same paragraph. When evidence is strong, still avoid overclaiming universality across populations.

Context, dose, endpoint, and population must travel together; slogans that drop any of those four are not finished claims.
